In his new documentary, Nas: Time Is Illmatic, in select theaters Wednesday and VOD Friday, rapper Nas goes way back. Back to that time his jazz musician dad told him he was too young to play the trumpet, so he started writing rhymes instead. (For the record: he was 8.) Back to his adolescence in the Queensbridge Houses when he filmed funny amateur music videos with friends, when those same friends were killed, when his father gave his blessing to drop out of high school to pursue an education on his terms. And, of course, back to when he recorded Illmatic and exploded onto the hip-hop scene.
The heartfelt, intimate, totally engrossing documentary is like going through a Nas scrapbook with Nas himself turning the pages: his candid interviews and narration walk you through the sounds and sights of his early life. See what we mean in this GQ.com exclusive clip from Nas: Time Is Illmatic.
